Bits and Pieces 53

Happy New Year!

The new Miss California is Natalie Ann Pack, who grew up in.............do you really need a hint?
Of course not!

I didn't watch the contest and had no idea who was entered. The Pack family is probably pretty happy with the news.

I have no real excuse for not publishing posts for almost a month. Some might think I was 'burned out' with dealing with the election.

I was very busy with my 'hobby' in the last month of 2011, more busy than I expected to me, but happy to have taken the opportunities.

"Luck" has finally premiered. I don't appear on that show until the last two episodes of its second season. I might be all over the big screen and small screen in 2013.

I did another 'shoot' for a Spike T.V. series that is currently running. My 'bit' won't appear until the show's fourth season and they are just about to premiere the shows third season.

Dave and Pamela are continuing there 'here for a bit, gone for a while, back for a bit' time with our side of the family. They came from Abu Dubai in late December and now are on a cruise in the Carribean, then back for a bit before heading to Reno/Tahoe, the Park City, all before finally jetting away in early February.

Now, some news dealing with eastern Rancho Palos Verdes and perhaps, other parts of our city.

Did you know the new Miss California grew up in Rancho Palos Verdes? See, I am now giving you the answer you probably already knew.

Asahi Grill is at least temporarily closed. One sign posted stated the eatery would have some 'remodeling' done.

I have not been to the L.A. Fitness/Bally's since January 1. I need to check it out to see if my registration moved or if I have to decide to join the new organization.

It probably did not matter that last night's fire was not mentioned by our Listserver. The fire broke out about the time of the last power outage last night and burned brush a little east of the area where the much larger fire was. No homes were damaged and it appears nobody got hurt, which is a very good thing.

Mayor Pro Tem Brian Campbell did keep those on his Email list informed and I want to thank him for that.

I have not tried this next bit out, but I read about it on the Facebook Page of the Terrace Theater in R.P.V. I guess if you order popcorn and you say "Popcorn make (you) thirsty" you just might get a free soft drink similar to the size of the popcorn you buy. Heck that is a GREAT thing for an already GREAT movie theater.

If this is true, I'll give another shout out to this wonderful business right here in eastern Rancho Palos Verdes.

I didn't attend the first City Council meeting of the year. It was scheduled for the P.V. I.C. at 6:00 P.M. on January 3 and the primary focus for the meeting were setting the goals for 2012. I will wait to see some of the highlights of the meeting, if there are any.

You do know that our city has its own television channel. It's Channel 33 on the cable system. You can also watch all the meetings you can possibly stand on our city's Web site, too.

I used to have to climb poles and set up and work underground while working for 'the phone company'. Back then I hated to work in the rain for more reasons than I shall type, here.

But now that rain is a memory, especially in late fall and winter, I don't seem to miss it, other than to consider what could happen without enough of it.

I think our water supplies got very well healed in the past few years and I don't think we will see water rationing any time soon.

But as a brush fire burning on January 9, 2012 indicates, we need to be understanding of what might be somewhere on or over the horizon.

I hope everyone has a great 2010. Please remember all the resolutions you made about this year. I have kept and will keep all of mine including not operation a leather-covered bulldozer this year.

I'll try to not procrastinate in writing on this blog and I hope to put out posts more regularly than once every months, or thereabouts.

  1. Terrace Cinema Promotion Update

It worked! Well, the promotion worked for me after I talked to the manager who then had to inform the counter staff about the promotion. They had not heard of it until the manager showed them how to deal with it.

During January, each time you buy popcorn, ask for it first and than say; "Popcorn makes me thirsty" you will receive a similar sized soda for FREE!

Naturally I buy the large size popcorn tub because it is good for one FREE refill, which is standard at the multiplex.

Normally the price I would pay for one large popcorn and a large soft drink is $11.00 which is not as bad as many other local theater chains. With large sized refreshments, they both have one free refill.

With the current promotion, I paid $6.00 for the popcorn and with the FREE Diet Coke, I got basically a $5.00 discount.

That all would have been just great but "We Bought A Zoo" was one of the best films I have seen this year and in quite a long time.

Better still, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, all 2D movies are just $4.00 per ticket, anytime, any show. (3D films go for $2.00 more)

Wednesdays, seniors who are better than 55 years of age aslo get in for $4.00, with the most we pay for any day, any 2D show never goes above $5.00.

We have a really grand opportunity to watch first-run films in a remodeled theater with a friendly staff at prices that are not found with other chains in the area.

Run by Starlight Theaters, our Terrace Cinemas is a bargain every day and during January a real bargain for those who love popcorn and soda.

  3. Thank you, Linda'

I have been very tardy with all my blogs, this one included. No real excuses to this and I will try to get back to regular updates.

As far as my Ponte Vista blog, we are STILL waiting for the new E.I.R. to get published and the comment period to begin. Once it is out, the first thing to do is demand an extension of the comment period. We think it may be as little as 45 days, but that is not long enough for our City Council and the Northwest San Pedro Neighborhood Council to weigh in and approve the comments they and other governmental organizations may need.

I am hearing and reading through several sources that the new Council's term has not started off as well as many voters had hoped and I may not be the only person who has some difficulty with things, at this point.

  4. Hi,

I'm new to this blog and currently live in Redondo Beach. I had a quick question that I hoped one of you might be able to answer as longtime RPV residents.

I understand that homes in the "Eastview RPV" area have the option of Palos Verdes School District or LA Unified. Is that arrangement firm? Is there any chance that will change?

My wife and I are currently looking at a home in Eastview RPV and we want to make sure our kids can someday go to PV schools. Also this would have a big impact on housing value long-term.

    Your response is much appreciated.

  5. Thank you, Mr. Stubbs.

Yes, public school age kids can attend L.A.U.S.D. schools, i.e. Crestwood Street Elementary, Dodson Intermediate, or San Pedro H.S. and it does not look like that will change.

There is also the ability to go through P.V.P.U.S.D. with the following 'normally attended schools' or Dapplegray Elementary, Miraleste Intermediate, then eigher Palos Verdes High School or Palos Verdes Peninsula High School.

The big information you might like to know is that about 80% of Eastview kids attend schools in P.V.P.U.S.D. and NOT L.A.U.S.D. While Crestwood Street Elementary is a fine school and has scores fairly high for an L.A. School, I have seen that kids to attend Crestwood then head to Miraleste tend to have some issues with joining other kids there who have attended P.V.P.U.S.D. elementary schools.

There really is little comparison between the three P.V.P.U.S.D. Intermediate schools and the two local L.A.U.S.D. intermediate schools and the gap is just as different between the P.V. high schools and San Pedro High School.

There is one exception, with Park Western Place Elementary School, in the L.A. System. it has a very good gifted program, somewhat similar to P.V.'s Cornerstone Elementary. The real difference that I have seen in the two is that Park Western Place is a block east of Western Avenue and Cornerstone is all the way on the other side of the peninsula from Eastview. I'm not going to say either of those two schools are better than the other one.

L.A.U.S.D. has magnet programs at Taper Avenue Elementary, close to Eastview and there is an elementary magnet for theater arts at the not-too-distant South Shores Elementary.

Dodson Intermediate also has magnet programs. My wife works at Miraleste Intermediate and I'm sure you will check the test scores at both schools to help you.

Here is the huge footnote; Because Eastview was annexed into Rancho Palos Verdes, out school tax issues and representation issues still loom large over Eastview.

The portion of property taxes paid for public education go to L.A.U.S.D. and the L.A. Community College District ('Our' kids can attend L.A.C.C.D. schools as an option, too).

The State reimburses P.V.P.U.S.D. for Eastview kids attending P.V.P.U.S.D. schools.

Our District representation also falls to L.A.U.S.D. and our voters have no vote for P.V.P.U.S.D. board members, ballot measures or bond-type measures with P.V.P.U.S.D. This does not look like it will change, even the the distant future.

I don't mind busing if kids get the best education possible but having up to 600 L.A.U.S.D. kids bussed into Dodson Intermediate (L.A.) when the school is within the boarders of Rancho Palos Verdes does irrate a lot of residents living near that campus.

Crestwood Street Elementary also has bussing from L.A.U.S.D. areas, but it is much smaller.

Both Districts have Web sites where you can establish a comparison between local schools.

There are some restrictions about changing Districts, but my kids did not attend schools in either district, so I don't know what the restrictions are.

The very short epilogue is that yes, your kids could attend schools in both Districts, but your tax money goes to L.A.U.S.D. and your voting rights go to L.A.U.S.D. and not P.V.P.U.S.D.
