In The PVP News Today.

The Web site for the Palos Verdes Peninsula News has not been updated to show articles from today's edition, yet. The newspaper's site URL is: http://www.pvnews.com/

The second largest headline, above the fold is titled: "Unknown caller stirs controversy" and it may involve a call from someone the person who received the call claims was representing "Marymount".

In a rather too-long piece on this blog, I stated my opinion and some facts about callers who may or MAY NOT be representing or supporting interests of Marymount College.

Well, the rumors have been flying around about a call and 'calls' from a person or persons somehow associated with the college.

I have no confirmation on any of it, but I would love to receive comments to this post with information from everyone who believes he or she received a call from someone who is either associated with or represents Marymount College and/or its interests.

The same article carried some information about the upcoming debates/forums and I found some interesting bits about the article I am now going to share.

Dr. Michael Brophy, President of Marymount College may have made a statement about the scheduled October 13 candidates' forum at Marymount College that was published, without quotation marks.

Dr. Brophy may have said that the forum is a great opportunity for students to learn about election process, campaign strategy and ethics.

Dr. Brophy was quoted as stating; "In America, we have a long tradition of political debates being held at universities." Dr. Brophy added, "College campuses provide a forum for free speech, inquiry and reflection."

Whether all the statements or true or not, they do bring up some almost comical concepts that Dr. Brophy may either get or is just trying to be funny about.

Students should have learned about election processes as early as elementary school and they all should have been well up to speed in how elections are conducted by the middle of their high school years...in America.

If Dr. Brophy believes students attending Marymount College need to learn more about elections in America, perhaps it is because so many students attending the college must have passports to get an education at Marymount College. Or perhaps they have little understanding about elections in California, if you know where I and they are coming from.

Now folks, you know I am a progressive and I fully understand that the majority of residents of our city have quite a different outlook on politics and whether many colleges offer 'free speech, inquiry and reflection.

How many times have we all heard or read something like; America's colleges are liberal bastions for the 'Liberal Agenda' being indoctrinated into our youth?

I absolutely agree with the part of Dr. Brophy's quote about the free speech to reflection part, but how many R.P.V. residents do?

The particular article also included information about some of the candidates who have agreed to attend the forum being held on Marymount's campus, scheduled for October 13.

In my previous post, I opined that both the Marymount forum and the Long Point HOA forum scheduled for September 7 should probably be canceled due to appearances.

While I have only endorsed Dave Emenhiser to become one of the three new Council members, I do agree with Candidate Susan Brooks who also wishes that the two more contreversail forums be canceled and the two debates, one sponsored by CHOA and the other by The League of Women Voters, still go on.

The article did state that Ms. Brooks will attend the forum at Marymount, though.

Mr. Eric Alegria, a candidate in the upcoming election plays a more central person in the article, with some surprises offered.

The reporter of the article is Ms. Mary Scott of the Palos Verdes Peninsula News.

In her article she offered that one called party received a call from a person who claimed they represented Marymount College and was calling with regards to supporting the candidacy of Mr. Alegria.

Ms. Scott's article also included information from Mr. Alegria that he knew nothing about the call, the caller, or the called party.

The article also contained a statement from Mr. Alegria that he attended the Candidates' Workshop and he agreed that he would not attend any debate or forum that wasn't 'impartial' in his view, as suggested in the workshop that other candidates should avoid, too.

Mr. Alegria stated he would not attend the October 13 forum on the campus of Marymount College.

Mr. Alegria's Field Director, Mr. Ryan Low, 'suggested the call could have been made by one of the high school students volunteering for the campaign', according to Ms. Scott's article.

BALDERDASH! That's my opinion about what Mr. Low suggests.

Please Mr. Low, tell me which 'high school student volunteer working on the Eric Alegria campaign' considers Marymount to be a 'high school'.

To go further, please tell me which students attending high schools within the P.V.P.U.S.D. consider Marymount to be a high school.

"Marymount" WAS a high school, at one point. In fact, it was a high school for females only and it was associated with the Catholic Religion. And yes, that high school has student residential facilities.

The article also contained that the reporter could find no new information about Ms. Cynthia Smith other than some statements that Ms. Smith may not actually work FOR Marymount College, but rather a 'representative for the college said that she works for another agency contracted by Marymount'.

I have heard that Ms. Smith works as an administrator and/or a secretary for Marymount's maintenance department. That department may be run via a contract with an independent company. The reporter attempted to contact Ms. Smith but nothing more was learned by 'press time'.

In the paper's "Election News On The Hill" page I found you have to go to the very bottom, right hand corner of the article to learn that the entire page is more propaganda than impartial writing.

The article does contain impartial information about the upcoming debates/forums and I hope every interested resident makes it to all of the debates/forums that are ultimately held.

Most of the page contains statements straight out of candidates' campaign information.

One part of the page announced the endorsement of Mr. Dave Emenhiser by Mayor Pro Tem Anthony Misetich. I wrote this because I support Mr. Emenhiser becoming a Rancho Palos Verdes City Council member.

Thursdays have me opening up The Daily Breeze but not reading it until I have found The Palos Verdes Peninsula News and have gone through it.
